Illamasqua: Make-up For Your Alter Ego…And Your Corpse

Everyday I pass a Illamasqua shop on my way to work and I’m always intrigued by the windows. The store is dark and mysterious and has a gothic Moulin Rouge feel. It feels sinister and glamorous at the same time. The models are always sexy and glamorous. This vibe all makes sense knowing their co-managing director is none other than founder of Agent Provocateur, Joe Corre (son of Vivienne Westwood!).

Illamasqua is “a brand that promotes the right to experiment and self-express through the way you look and remains committed to changing attitudes towards subcultures”.

And this week they have announced their plans to take self-expression one step forward and have teamed up with Leverton & Sons of London for their latest venture. What is Leverton & Sons? They, my friends, are well-known funeral directors of London.

Illamasqua and Leverton & Sons have come together to, as they say, offer the final act of self-expression: a corpse makeover. For £450 you can enter into the afterlife looking more glamorous than ever. When you go to pick out your casket you can select the tone of your makeover as well. Smokey eye, anyone?

Some people may think this new partnership is a bit strange. I however think there is something to it. My Grandma passed away in January and at the visitation (I come from a Southern American family where this is common) a few of the (female) family members started to debate whether or not the colour of lipstick the funeral home chose suited her. There were some differing opinions but the end result involved the ‘make-up’ artist taking my cousins lipstick to fix the colour. Odd? A bit. But it did allow for a few much-needed laughs. However, had there been the opportunity to plan the make-up this wouldn’t have been an issue.

So I’m starting to think that, although it’s a bit odd and morbid, planning make-up in the same way you plan an outfit when you plan a funeral isn’t such a bad idea.

What do you think? Do you think it’s a bit eccentric? A good idea? Would you do it?

Recipe of the Week: S’mores Bars

To feed the pity party I’ve been having in regards to employment and other realms of my life I haven’t blogged about, I decided to make something really unhealthy to comfort myself. What did I make? S’mores bars! My friend from high school made them when I was visiting her and I loved them. Yesterday when I was at the store I saw marshmallow creme and decided to make them!

I got the recipe online, there are loads! Here’s the one I used:

1/2 cup butter, room temperature
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/3 cups flour
3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
2 king-sized Hershey chocolate bars
1 1/2 cups marshmallow creme/fluff (not melted marshmallows)
Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease an 8×8 square baking pan.

In large bowl, cream together butter and sugar. Beat in egg and vanilla. In small bowl whisk together flour, graham cracker crumbs, baking powder and salt. Add to butter mixture and mix at a low speed until combined.

Divided dough in half and press half of the dough into an even layer on the bottom or the pan. Place chocolate bars over dough. Spread chocolate with marshmallow creme. Place remaining dough on top of the marshmallow (most easily acheived my flattening dough into small shingles and layering them together with hands)

Bake for 30 minutes, cool before cutting.

Slavery in High Heels

Last week I went for dinner with a friend and girl I used to intern with and we were catching each other up on our latest ‘jobs’.

I love working in fashion and am willing to do what it takes to get my foot in the door. A career in fashion PR allows for a behind the scenes look into the fashion industry and is great for business minded fashionistas interested in a creative industry. I personally love it, and for me it is the best of both. You get to write, plan and work events, work with magazines and stylists, and make pitches and bids to new clients. Think of campaign strategies. It’s the perfect field to start my career and is a great base for my future business ideas (more on that another time).

However, sometimes after a long days work I find myself frustrated at the industry. At what point have you paid your dues? What qualifies you for a real job? Or to at least be acknowledged?

Like most industries these days, there are so many people who are qualified you have to start building your CV early to create a competitive edge over your peers and gain experience. Especially with fewer jobs being available in an already competitive industry. In uni I had great internships and after uni I had even greater internships. I’ve now interned for a total of 10 months full-time in fashion and fashion PR, that’s excluding 5 months of internships in other PR and business internships not relating to the industry.

At what point do you stop and say you aren’t interning anymore? Do you put a limit on yourself? I’m 23, uni educated, have a boat load of great internships under my belt and I’m still working for free. Not even making minimum wage or having my travel covered. I’m working 45 hours a week and doing the ‘manual labour’ that is required of PR agencies to function. And I know TONS of people exactly like me. Where I am now, 15 of around 65 employees are unpaid interns. And this is common. If all interns at fashion PR agencies went on strike for a day, the fashion industry in London would come to a screeching halt.

Money aside, at what point do interns have to go to to gain acknowledgement for all they do?

How long would you intern for free in order to get your dream job?

Right now I’m happy still interning, but ask me in a couple of months and I may have a different opinion! And in the meantime, I’m just going to do what the picture above says… keep calm and carry on (applying for real jobs)!

A Trip to City of Coco, Chanel

It was late on a Tuesday night. The Palace Vendome was lit by a blanket of stars and moonlight. It was a breathtaking cityscape… all inside the Grand Palais.

The occasion? Its obvious that this is the work of none other than Karl Lagerfeld, who always has a penchant for the mysteriously dramatic. It was the AW11 Chanel Haute Coutour show, of course. Famed for its beautiful show locations, this show kept with the stunning and beautiful standards of its predecessors. The floors glistened like the square would after a rain shower and instead of Napoleon at the top of the squares statue it was Coco Chanel herself.

The highlights? The setting of course.  And lets not forget the clothes. The tweed was stunning, the dresses exquisite and the tailoring to die for. Nothing less than expected. Lets marvel together at what was on show, including shoes with headlights! And lets not forget, the traditional finale — a couture wedding gown!

Magnificent!

Princess Kate, and I don’t mean the royal!

Its vintage inspired, feminine, figure hugging, sexy, pretty, bohemian and glamorous. Its Galliano. Seriously, I never thought I’d say it but I love Kate Moss’ wedding dress.

I, admittedly, have never been her biggest fan however, Kate has managed to wear my dream dress. Seriously, I have saved pictures of wedding dresses since I was 8 and got a bridal magazine every year in my basket from the Easter Bunny. This one looks like many of the ones I have. Only its perfect!

All the detail. And the veil! Gosh! Lets just have a moment of silence while we stare at a couple of the pictures.

En Pointe: Louboutin’s Newest Creation

This week images were released showing a Christian Louboutin designed pair of 8-inch high heels. Aka pointe shoes with heels and of course, a red sole.

Covered in Swarovski crystals, I have to admit that they had me at hello. Every article I come across I can’t help but stare. The shoes, made specially to be auctioned off at the Summer Party Silent Auction, are to help raise funds for the English National Ballet.

What are Mr. Louboutin’s thoughts? “I could not help being inspired by English National Ballet. After all… isn’t the classical dancing ballet slipper the ultimate heel? The heel which makes dancers closer than any other women to the sky, closer to heaven!

It might be poetic but I’d like to see someone move a metre, let a lone dance! Obviously, these shoes are meant for a life of sitting proudly on display in the home of the highest bidder. I know I could find a place to show them off. Too bad I’m sure they will go at a price WAY out of my range!

Wish List: Marc Jacobs’ New “Khaki Tote”

How great are these? I can definitely see one of them on my arm. I’m thinking the blue.. How gorgeous. Wear it with cut-off denim shorts and a tee now, and brighten up outfits come Fall and Winter.

I’m also loving the shape and shade of orange of the “Fern Handbag” below.

Too bad they aren’t in stores yet because I want one now!
